Performance Architecture is an international ideas competition aimed at choosing proposals for five temporary urban interventions within the scope of the Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture.
The conference that is being announced now brings together specialists and the jury members in a debate about architectural and urban structures that reactivate approaches to Performance Art and provide new insights about the role of architects, artists and designers within the urban context.
The same session will reveal the five competition proposals chosen to be built, and which will be inaugurated in the public space of the city of Guimarães in June 2012.

Performance Architecture is an international ideas competition aimed at choosing proposals for five temporary urban interventions in the scope of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture. The competition intends to draw up architectural and urban strategies that, in reactivating performance art approaches, provide new directions as to the roles of architects, artists and designers in the urban context. The competition selects multidisciplinary teams proposing temporary concepts and structures that will stimulate the appropriation of controversial public spaces by the city inhabitants.
While welcoming temporary interventions that meet programming needs for the visibility and urban interaction of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture (kiosks, receptions, micro-exhibitions, meeting- points, playgrounds, etc.), the Performance Architecture competition focuses on architectural and urban practices that replace the building of monuments and other lasting structures with installations, actions, happenings and temporary urban interventions.
Through ideas that will come out of a bottom-up selection process – however involving protagonists who foresaw this approach as members of the jury and participants in a one-day seminar – Performance Architecture centres on architectural operations that acknowledge the awareness of the body, the relevance of the community and the presence of a social critique in reinventing public space.
01WHERE CAN I GET THE ENROLMENT FORM?The enrolment form will be available on the site to fill out in November.
02IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE A PROPOSAL FOR A SPECIFIC SPACE OR TO LEAVE THE DEFINITIVE CHOICE OF THE SITE FOR THE PROPOSAL OPEN?Participants can present a proposal attributing a site for it or not. The choice of the site will be taken into account, but may have to be altered if the development of the project justifies this. In either situation, the jury will not make an assessment based on the geographical pertinence.
03IS IT POSSIBLE TO ENTER MORE THAN ONE PROPOSAL?Each participating team can enter only one proposal.
04CAN THE TEAM BE MADE UP OF PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS?Yes.
05MUST THE TEAM BE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY UNIT?The proposals should be developed starting with a multidisciplinary team as their base, thus allowing the crossing and interaction of different areas. The team may include people who, although they are from the same background in terms of training, have become specialised in different areas, as long as the contribution of, and relationship between, the different sources of knowledge are made clear in the proposal.
06IS IT POSSIBLE TO INTERVENE ON ABANDONED OR EMPTY BUILDINGS?Proposals for interventions on abandoned or empty buildings will have to receive later approval and it may or may not be possible, with the feasibility of the proposal having to be verified on a case by case basis.
07WHAT IS THE PERIOD FOR THE EXHIBITING OF THE WINNING PROJECTS?Winning projects will be exhibited between the 16th of June and the 29th of July (with the possibility of a time extension until September).
08SHOULD THE PRESENTATION PANELS FOR THE PROJECTS BE VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL?Vertical.
09CAN A TEAM BE MADE UP EXCLUSIVELY OF STUDENTS?Yes.
